$2bn CNG Boost and EV Rollout Signal Nigeria’s Clean Mobility Shift

Nigeria’s transition to cleaner transport has reached a new milestone, with the Federal Government ramping up efforts toward a nationwide electric vehicle (EV) roll out while securing over $2 billion in investments in compressed natural gas (CNG) mobility infrastructure. The renewed drive reflects an ambitious shift toward more sustainable automotive solutions and deeper market engagement across West Africa.

The announcement came courtesy of Ismael Ahmed, Executive Chairman of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PI-CNG), who unveiled PI-CNG 2.0 in Abuja. Ahmed highlighted the programme’s rapid progress — from minimal presence in 2023 to 58 CNG refuelling stations across 28 states and more than 100,000 vehicles converted to CNG in under two years, underscoring the initiative’s viability and investor confidence. 

While CNG deployment remains a priority, the federal strategy has broadened to include electric mobility on a national scale. Officials say the shift illustrates Nigeria’s dual approach to clean transport, blending gas-powered alternatives with a firm push toward EV adoption, backed by policy support, training programs, and local content development, including a 10-hectare industrial park in Ajaokuta for domestic manufacturing of CNG equipment. 

The West Africa Automotive Show (WAAS) has been instrumental in this broader transition, emerging as a regional hub for innovation, investment and sector dialogue — particularly in EV and alternative-fuel segments. The previous edition included a wide range of CNG manufacturers and suppliers, with the 2026 event promising to provide even more.
