CNG Adoption Surges in Nigeria - 100,000 Confirmed

Nigeria’s transition to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is gaining strong momentum, with the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG) confirming that over 100,000 vehicles are now operating on CNG across the country.

In addition, over 4,600 tricycles have already been deployed using CNG, highlighting growing adoption across both commercial and public transport segments.

Why This Matters for the Automotive Industry

PiCNG stated that the private sector is increasingly converting and refitting fleets—especially logistics and long-haul transport operators—as demand rises for cheaper fuel alternatives and more sustainable vehicle solutions.

The initiative also reported that Nigeria now has over 11,000 natural gas vehicles assembled, including haulage trucks and thousands of commercial fleet trucks already using CNG.

This milestone signals a new era for Nigeria’s automotive aftermarket and fleet economy. With over 100,000 vehicles already converted and a national target of 1 million conversions by 2027, CNG adoption is quickly becoming one of the biggest transformation opportunities in West Africa’s automotive sector.
