Electric mobility gathers pace in Nigeria as Spiro wins sustainability award
Nigeria’s move to electric mobility was recognised at the West Africa Sustainability Summit 2026 in Lagos, where Spiro was named Most Sustainable Integrated Electric Vehicle Ecosystem Company of the Year. The award recognises the company’s model of pairing electric motorcycles with battery-swapping infrastructure to speed up the switch to clean transport.
A market growing at speed
Spiro has only been operating in Nigeria since 2024, but it is scaling quickly. At a media event in Lagos on 9 October, the company said it now runs about 120 battery-swapping stations and 11 service centres across Lagos, Ogun, Oyo and Benue states. It has completed around 84,000 battery swaps in Nigeria since launch, and it is targeting 100,000 electric motorcycles on Nigerian roads within two to three years. Expansion into four more states is planned for 2027.
The company says its motorcycles cost about 40% less to run than conventional bikes once purchase, maintenance and energy costs are combined.
Policy is pushing in the same direction
Spiro’s growth reflects a wider shift. In October alone:
- The National Economic Council agreed to set up a joint federal and state financing framework to speed up deployment of CNG and electric vehicles
- Lagos stopped admitting new diesel buses into its regulated transport system and directed operators towards CNG and electric alternatives
- The House of Representatives called for a licensing framework for EV and CNG imports, including certified service and repair centres and supplies of genuine spare parts
What it means for the trade
Every electric vehicle on the road needs batteries, chargers, swap infrastructure, diagnostic tools, trained technicians and a reliable supply of parts. As the electric fleet grows, so does demand for the suppliers, distributors and service partners who keep it running. WAAS 2027 is where that supply chain meets the buyers. Battery, EV component and charging suppliers can meet Nigeria’s importers, distributors, fleet operators and workshops face to face.
