Electric Vehicles Take Centre Position in Nigeria’s Industrial Transformation, Says Trade Minister

Nigeria is placing Electric Vehicles (EVs) at the centre of its strategy for industrial growth, economic diversification, and transport-sector innovation, according to the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole. 

Speaking during a visit to Saglev Electromobility’s assembly plant in Imota, Lagos, Dr. Oduwole emphasised how domestic EV production aligns with the government’s “Nigeria First” policy, which seeks to prioritise local investors and manufacturers. She pointed to recent legistlation amendments and manufacturing initiatives that have strengthened collaboration with domestic SMEs and medium‑to‑large enterprises, with the intention of creaing a more favorable and appealing production centre in Nigeria. 

Underlining the economic advantages of EV adoption, the minister highlighted that EVs use up to 80% less energy than conventional vehicles—boosting productivity and reducing operating costs. Projects like the coastal road were cited as evidence of how EVs can accelerate national development goals. Customs reform remains a key priority for global trade facilitation. The minister pledged to continue addressing bottlenecks in customs and import procedures, referencing the successful rollout of Nigeria’s National Single Window Project and automated processes that have enhanced compliance efficiency.

Sales of EVs are underpinned by growing support infrastructure. The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) is developing a National Occupational Standard for EV maintenance and servicing—establishing curricula across technical colleges and universities to expand the skills pool for EV servicing nationwide.
