NADDC and the CEO of AAAM tour IVM and Afro Asia in Nnewi to Promote the Development of Local Manufacturing
As the Nigerian Automotive Industry Development Plan (NAIDP) gains momentum, the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) is actively working to ensure the successful realization of its objectives. The latest initiative involved a tour of local automotive content manufacturers by NADDC Director-General Mr. Joseph Osanipin, accompanied by partners from the African Association of Automotive Manufacturers (AAAM).
During the second and third days of the tour, which focused on the eastern part of Nigeria, Mr. Osanipin and AAAM officials visited Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company Ltd (IVM) and Afro Asia Nigeria Ltd in Nnewi, Anambra State, as well as several firms in Enugu.
Osanipin praised both Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing and Afro Asia Nigeria for their innovation and expressed a keen interest in replicating their models to enhance local manufacturing capabilities across Nigeria. He highlighted Innoson's achievement in producing complete CNG buses from scratch using locally sourced materials such as glass, iron, and plastic. Osanipin expressed a desire to replicate this model with other manufacturing entities and to partner with Innoson to further develop the industry.
The Director-General emphasized the importance of setting standards and conducting peer reviews with other economies. He commended Innoson for prioritizing local content and urged the company to continue improving its already high local content levels, given the available capacity, expertise, and materials.
Osanipin assured Nigerians that IVM's vehicles meet global standards. Dave Coffey, CEO of AAAM, noted that the visit was part of the association’s mission to industrialize and grow the automotive sector in Africa. Coffey outlined AAAM's steps to achieve this mission, including working with African governments to develop and refine policies, collaborating with the public and private sectors, promoting affordable mobility with safe, low-emission vehicles, and developing local auto components and value chains.
Overall, the visit underscored the need to promote Nigeria’s automotive industry, enhance local auto component manufacturing, and embrace affordable, sustainable sources to drive economic growth and development. The visitors also toured Innoson Technical and Industrial Company in Emene, a leading plastics and automotive accessories manufacturer, along with Innoson's subsidiary General Tyres and Tubes, and the ANAMMCO auto plant.
