Nigeria's Automotive Market Set for 7.5% Growth as Africa's Industry Gains Momentum

Nigeria's automotive industry is expected to record 7.6% growth in new vehicle sales during 2026, highlighting the country's growing role as Africa's most important automotive markets. The positive outlook reflects improving economic conditions, increased investment and policy measures designed to strengthen vehicle ownership and automotive trade across Africa.

According to industry forecasts, stronger fuel availability, easing inflation and government initiatives to support the automotive sector are contributing to improve economic output and create new opportunities for manufacturers, distributors, importers and aftermarket businesses operating across Africa.

One of the key developments supporting this growth is the continued impact of the Dangote Refinery, which has significantly improved domestic fuel production and strengthened Nigeria's energy security. Greater fuel availability is expected to enhance transport efficiency, lower supply chain pressures and provide a more stable operating environment for businesses throughout Africa's automotive value chain.

The Federal Government has also introduced tariff reforms as part of its 2026 Fiscal Policy Measures, helping to create a more favourable environment for vehicle imports and automotive investment. These measures are expected to encourage greater market activity while supporting long-term industry development.

Nigeria remains one of Africa's largest automotive markets, serving as a strategic gateway to West Africa and the wider continent. As demand for passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, spare parts, tyres, lubricants and workshop equipment continues to rise, businesses are increasingly looking to Nigeria as a key destination for expansion.

Events such as the West Africa Automotive Show (WAAS) play an important role in connecting global suppliers with distributors, importers, fleet operators, manufacturers and key decision-makers from across Africa. As the region's automotive sector continues to evolve, industry collaboration and investment will remain central to unlocking new opportunities throughout the continent.
