Three Leading Car Companies Making Noise in the West African Automotive Market

Several West African countries are making notable advancements in the car manufacturing industry, challenging traditional views and highlighting the region’s potential for economic growth and technological progress.

Nigeria and Ghana are the leading players in this emerging sector, hosting innovative companies that are making significant impacts in the automotive sector.

The three car manufacturers include - Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company, Nord Automobiles Limited and Kantanka Automobile. 

Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company

Founded by Nigerian entrepreneur Innocent Chukwuma, Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company (IVM) is a trailblazer in Nigerian automotive technology. With its production facility in Nnewi, Anambra State, Innoson has manufactured over 500 vehicles as of August 2020, including pickup vans, SUVs, and buses. Notable models include the Innoson Fox, Innoson Umu, and the Innoson G5 SUV. 

Nord Automobiles Limited

Based in Lagos, Nord Automobiles is a prominent Nigerian car manufacturer founded by Ajayi Joshua Oluwatobi. The company meets the demand for uniquely Nigerian automobiles by managing the entire value chain, from design and development to assembly, distribution, marketing, and after-sales services. 

Kantanka Automobile

Established by Dr. Ing. Kwadwo Safo Kantanka, Kantanka Automobile is a source of national pride in Ghana. The company produces a wide range of vehicles, including saloon cars, SUVs, and pick-up trucks, for both local and international markets. Based in Ghana, Kantanka has become a major player in the country’s automotive industry by offering high-quality, locally-manufactured vehicles.
